Instructions

How to Make a Superfood Smoothie

  • Add ingredients to a blender in the order they are listed in the recipe. (For example, with the berry smoothie, you would add the whey to your blender first.)
  • If you are using a traditional blender, you will need to blend the ingredients for at least 2 minutes.
  • When using a traditional blender, if you find that the nuts, seeds, and other small ingredients do not become fully pulverized, you may want to blend them in the blender by themselves. Afterward, empty the blender contents and add the ingredients in the order listed in the recipe.
  • Alternatively, if you have a coffee bean or spice grinder, you can grind your nuts, seeds, and other hard ingredients, in the smaller grinder first and then add the ground ingredients to your blender in the order listed in the recipe.
  • If you are using a high-speed blender, you will need to blend the ingredients for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • If you do not use frozen fruit and vegetables, you will need to add a few ice cubes to your mixture to create a cold custard-like consistency. (For more information, see the video and the Recipe Notes below.)
  • Once you finish blending your Superfood Smoothie, pour it into a glass and enjoy.
  • If you are not ready to drink your smoothie, you can refrigerate it for up to 1-2 days, but the consistency might change slightly.
  • Alternatively, you can freeze your smoothie in a freezer-safe container, allowing sufficient headspace for expansion, for up to 3 months. When you are ready to enjoy your smoothie, allow it to defrost overnight in the refrigerator.

Notes

Fruits and Vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are best used frozen to create a smoothie with a cold custard-like consistency.
Carrots and Cruciferous Vegetables: When using carrots or cruciferous vegetables in smoothies, you should steam or blanch them first before freezing them. Raw cruciferous vegetables are not only hard to digest, they are also difficult to blend into a smooth consistency. As an option, you can also use store-bought frozen vegetables since they have been blanched before freezing.
