In my newest member video, I’m sharing one of my favorite old-fashioned tricks for turning a simple bowl of oatmeal into a hearty, protein-rich porridge. It’s something our ancestors knew well—how to take humble grains and give them staying power for a full day of work ahead.

Boosting Protein the Old-Fashioned Way

Instead of just cooking oats in water, I like to swirl in beaten eggs right as the porridge finishes cooking. This may sound unusual at first, but it creates the most delicious result. The eggs blend in beautifully, making the oats creamier, tastier, and far more nourishing. Best of all, you can’t even tell there are eggs in the bowl—it just tastes rich and satisfying.

This little technique does more than improve flavor. It boosts the protein content naturally, without needing powders or packaged add-ins. By following the wisdom of those who came before us, we can create meals that are both wholesome and filling. And since whole grains like oats are already packed with fiber and minerals, pairing them with protein from eggs makes them a more complete, balanced food.

Making Flaked Grain for Oatmeal

With the Flake Lovers Flaker by Wolfgang Mock, you can make flaked grain, such as flaked oats, to use in your favorite recipes, including oatmeal, bread, cookies, and more!

With your stored whole grain, you can use this electric device to create freshly flaked grain. This device flakes whole grain literally in minutes. I’ll show you how in the video from my Flake Lover’s Flaker from Mockmill – New Traditional Foods Cook Tool blog post.
