The Journey of Writing The Modern Pioneer Pantry
Writing The Modern Pioneer Pantry has been an incredible journey—filled with excitement, long hours, and so much joy. From the moment I started envisioning this book, I knew I wanted to create something truly special for my sweet friends—something that would serve as a guide, a resource, and a companion on our shared traditional foods journey.
I’ve loved teaching about the Four Corners Pantry on my YouTube channel, but I wanted to bring it all together in a book, a tangible reference that could take a treasured spot on your kitchen shelf and you could use daily.
Building the Four Corners Pantry
I poured my heart into making this book as thorough and practical as possible. Stocking a traditional pantry is more than just filling shelves—it’s about creating security and nourishment for our families. That’s why I structured the book to first walk through each “corner” of the Four Corners Pantry:
- Working Pantry
- Refrigerator
- Freezer
- Extended Pantry (or as I like to call it, the Prepper Pantry)
I wanted to share not just what to preserve to stock in your Four Corners Pantry but also how to use what you preserve, giving you all the knowledge you need to confidently build your own well-stocked traditional foods kitchen and create nourishing meals.
Mastering Food Preservation Techniques
One of the most exciting parts of writing this book was expanding on all the food preservation techniques I’ve shared in my videos. I wanted to make sure you had everything you needed in one place—whether it’s water bath canning, pressure canning, dehydrating, fermenting, freezing, or pickling.
It was important to me that the book didn’t just explain how to do these techniques but that it also included delicious recipes to help you use your preserved foods in everyday meals. There’s nothing better than opening a jar of something you’ve put up yourself and turning it into a nourishing dish for your family, friends, and neighbors.
Bringing the Book to Life
The photography process was one of the most fascinating aspects of bringing the Modern Pioneer Cookbook series to life. Seeing my recipes and techniques come to life on the pages was truly magical. In both of my books, I was blessed to work with the same talented food stylist and photographer who understood my vision—capturing the warmth, beauty, and practicality of a well-stocked pantry.
Each dish was carefully arranged to reflect the cozy, inviting atmosphere I enjoy creating in my own home. I wanted this book to feel like stepping into a traditional kitchen, where everything is made with love and purpose.
Of course, the process of creating a cookbook is never without its challenges! There were long days of testing and refining recipes, writing and re-writing sections, and making sure every detail was just right. But through it all, I kept thinking of you—my sweet friend—and how I wanted this book to truly serve you in your kitchen. That thought gave me the energy to push forward, knowing that every bit of effort was worth it if it could help even one person feel more confident in their traditional foods journey.
A Labor of Love for Our Traditional Foods Community
Holding the finished book in my hands for the first time was an emotional moment. It’s one thing to dream of something and work toward it, but to finally see it come to life—well, that was just incredible. I ran my hands over the cover and thought of all the conversations we’ve had on YouTube, in emails, and in the comments. This book isn’t just a project—it’s an extension of our traditional foods community, of the traditional foods movement…a love letter to this beautiful, nourishing way of life.
I can’t wait for you to dive into The Modern Pioneer Pantry! My hope is that it will be a source of inspiration and encouragement, a book that you turn to again and again as you build your pantry, preserve your own food, and cook nourishing meals for your family.
