How to Dehydrate Bone Broth and Store Beef Bouillon Powder

Watch the Member Kitchen Pioneers Live Stream 22 video

I was happy to chat with my sweet Kitchen Pioneers during June’s live stream on June 30, 2022. Among the topics, we talked about making beef bouillon powder and pioneer women.

This live stream replay is available to Kitchen Pioneers who have joined my YouTube membership communityโ€”The Traditional Foods Kitchen Academy.

Making Beef Bouillon Powder

What fun we had on this last live! We covered a variety of traditional foods subjects, including:

  • Some of the best flours with which to bake bread
  • How to store bone broth

The bone broth topic garnered the most interest! As I shared in the live stream, yes, you can dehydrate bone broth, which is also called beef bouillon powder. And you don’t even need a dehydrator!

Instead, you can dehydrate bone broth in a warm oven. When the bone broth dries, it looks like stained glass, which you can break into shards and then pulverize in a blender. You don’t need to buy any expensive bone broth powders.

You can learn more in my how to make bone broth powder video.

Storing Beef Bouillon Powder

As to the shelf stable nature of your bone broth powder, always keep in mind that there is never a 100% exact answer when we are dealing with homemade items. If you determine that your bone broth is at least 90% dry (or more) and you store it in a jar with a silica gel pack to absorb any small residual amount of moisture, you might be able to keep your dried bone broth in the pantry for a month or two.

To be on the safe side, I personally find it best to store my homemade bone broth powder in the fridge or freezer. It should be able to stay fresh refrigerated for at least a few months and maybe 6 months in the freezer.

Learn more about how to store and rehydrate bone broth or beef bouillon in the following video.

When you rehydrate your beef bouillon powder, you can use it anywhere you would use bone broth, such as for a soup base.

Great Pioneer Women of the Outback

My thanks to one of my Kitchen Pioneers from Australia who sent me this fascinating book on Great Pioneer Women of the Outback. I’ve always been fascinated by women pioneers who faced many a difficult time with strength and grace. They persevered and were productive (even indispensable!) members of their homestead.

I hope I live up to their legacy to at the very least run my traditional foods kitchen like a modern pioneer!
