Create a Kitchen Garden from Scraps

As home cooks in our Traditional Foods Kitchens, we don’t like to waste. But sometimes we have little bits of leftover vegetable scraps that we don’t know what to do with. Well, in my earlier kitchen scraps video, I showed how you can grow completely new vegetables from those little scraps. And today, we are going to plant those scraps in my kitchen garden.

Gardening for the Beginner

If you are new to gardening, you may not be ready to create a full-sized kitchen garden. You also may not have the time or money to invest in a large backyard garden. However, it’s easy and inexpensive to start gardening by planting a few kitchen scraps in a small area of your yard or even just in a flower pot on a balcony. Taking small steps and seeing your plants grow gives you confidence, which is a wonderful way for beginners to nurture their love of gardening.

In my kitchen garden video, I show you how a few green onion scraps, a lettuce core, a lone garlic clove, a small piece of ginger, and other vegetable scraps can turn into a bountiful harvest of food to help you save money and empower your food supply.

Hi Mary I enjoyed watching the two related videos especially with your son Ben. I was wondering if you did a follow up post or photos to see how well the scraps grew.
Yours is one of the best channels to give thorough information that a beginner could follow.
Keep up the good work…folk need inspiration especially in times like these now
    Thank you

    1. Mary's Nest says:

      Hi Margaret,

Thanks for your comment and kind words. Alas. We had that terrible winter storm in Texas in February that wiped out all my plants, and I had to start all over again and never got around to filming it. However, I talk about some of our experiences in my “How to Create a Kitchen Garden” post Parts 1 and 2 at https://marysnest.com/how-to-create-a-kitchen-garden/ and https://marysnest.com/kitchen-garden-tour-my-potager-garden-is-blooming/

Thanks again for your wonderful thoughts. I’m so happy that you’re here and on this traditional foods journey with me!

      Love and God bless,
      Mary
