A Comprehensive Cookbook Curriculum

The Cookbook Curriculum as a Teaching Tool

Thank you for being on this traditional foods journey with me over these last five years. I hope that The Modern Pioneer Cookbook Curriculum I am sharing with you for free today is a way for me to say thank you to YOU! This curriculum is the perfect companion to use with my bestselling book, The Modern Pioneer Cookbook. The cookbook is a beautiful teaching tool because it is so much more than a cookbook; it’s a detailed step-by-step manual for creating a traditional foods kitchen!

Teach Lifelong Skills

No matter where you are on your Traditional Foods Journey, I hope you will take others with you, and in the enduring words of Sally Fallon, “Teach, teach, teach!” We want to share and preserve these traditional food skills for future generations. In doing so, our children and grandchildren will develop lifelong skills, knowing how to prepare nourishing foods and developing a sense of self-sufficiency as they create their own Traditional Foods Kitchens. This curriculum makes it easier to teach traditional recipes and kitchen skills to students in grades K-12.

Creating this curriculum was a labor of love, much like writing The Modern Pioneer Cookbook. Because I wanted the final product to be top-notch, I enlisted the help of an experienced educator and curriculum developer, and the results far exceeded my expectations!

An Amazing Resource

This curriculum is over 250 pages and provides detailed lesson plans with grade-appropriate instruction that encompasses all areas of study, including creative writing, culture, geography, history, math, science, and more…all while learning how to make traditional foods. It’s the best of ALL worlds. 😊

As I shared with you, I homeschooled my sweet son Ben for grades 1-8. I would have loved to have had this curriculum back then! But I hope this curriculum contains much of what I learned as I taught Ben traditional cooking skills as he grew up with me in the kitchen. Just as I have taught my son how to be self-sufficient in the kitchen, you can also teach your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors how to do the same.

But you do not have to be a homeschooler. This curriculum is appropriate for teaching anyone how to be a traditional foods cook. You can use the curriculum as an after-school or weekend program, and you can even turn it into a summer camp community program. It’s also perfect for educators who want to institute a well-rounded home economics program. (This study area has been sorely missing from our school systems in recent times!)

  1. Hi Mary,

I’ve seen you some on YouTube and was pleasantly surprised to find you in Backwoods Home Magazine! I just started reading it. I enjoyed your article about ancient grains. I’ve tried baking some with spelt, hoping that it would be a good wheat replacement, but haven’t had much luck. I’ve tried it in quick breads, and it’s usually ok if I mix it with all-purpose flour. I will try your recipes and suggestions.

    Sincerely,

    Lila

    1. Hi Lila,

Thanks for your kind words. I’m so glad you saw my article in the Jan/Feb/Mar 2024 issue of Backwoods Home. I enjoy reading that magazine, and I’m happy for the opportunity to write for it.

When baking with ancient grains in their whole form, or any whole grain for that matter, yes, it will work best if you add a bit of all-purpose flour. I use various ratios, but I generally like at least a 3:1 ratio—3 cups whole grain flour to 1 cup all-purpose flour (or bread flour). I discuss this in detail in my new book, The Modern Pioneer Cookbook. You can learn more about the book with a chapter-by-chapter review in my video at https://marysnest.com/a-detailed-look-inside-the-modern-pioneer-cookbook/

If you would like to add my cookbook to your kitchen bookshelf, you can find it at all the major book retailers or online at https://marysnest.com/my-cookbook/

I like baking with Einkorn, and I have a video on How to Make All Purpose Einkorn Flour at Home at https://marysnest.com/all-purpose-einkorn-flour/ . You can use the same technique to make all-purpose spelt flour. So when you bake with whole-grain spelt flour, you can use some all-purpose spelt flour. It works great!

Thanks so much for writing to me! 🙂

      Love and God bless,
      Mary

    1. Hi Zina,
