I have been blessed to make two new friends in person and online recently, and I’m excited to introduce you to them. I’m sure you’ll become fast friends with them too! They are both authors, and that leads me to let you know about seven books that you’ll love as a Traditional Foods Cook.

Sophie Eng

I was on the Good Foods Podcast hosted by Shardan Sandoval, and as we were chatting about traditional foods, Shardan said he was going to be interviewing Sophie Eng for an upcoming podcast. I let him know I already had her new book, The Nourishing Asian Kitchen, and was enjoying it tremendously. Well, when Shardan spoke with Sophie, he told her that I was a big fan. Sophie was thrilled to hear this, and she contacted me directly to be a guest on her Call to Farms Podcast.

When I was on Sophie’s podcast, we hit it off right away. (We traditional foods cooks tend to do that!) Sophie said she was going to be in Austin, Texas, for a conference and hoped we could get together. I answered with a resounding yes!

Once in Austin, we met Sophie, her two daughters, her mom, and a good friend who were all traveling with her. We took them out for Texas barbecue. Their eyes widened at the portion sizes of all the food—Texas-sized indeed! We topped off our meal with the house specialty of peach cobbler topped with a huge scoop of Blue Bell ice cream—a Texas-born and bred classic. We’re confident no one went home hungry!

I loved meeting Sophie and her family, and I am happy to call her my friend. We were at home chatting with each other in person as we did online, and I look forward to one day visiting her and her homestead in Tennessee.

Kelly the Kitchen Kop

Many years ago, I started following Kelly the Kitchen Kop’s blog. I did not know Kelly Moeggenborg at the time, and I didn’t have a social media presence on the Internet. I simply enjoyed reading blogs about traditional foods, and Kelly’s was top-notch.

Fast forward to 2024, and I finally reached out to Kelly on Instagram, and she wrote me back! I was thrilled and told her I was a long-time fan of her work. Getting to know Kelly online and becoming her friend has been a lot of fun. I hope we’ll get to meet in person one day.

In addition to Kelly’s blog, she is also the author of two books. Both books, one for adults and the other for children, will surely delight all readers. They are chockfull of the information that we traditional food cooks love!

Seven Books for the Traditional Foods Cook

Now, what about those seven books for traditional foods cooks? Well, you already know two of them—Kelly’s books (which I count as one) and Sophie’s book. The remaining five books are essential reading, and they would be perfect on your traditional foods kitchen bookshelf next to your well-worn copy of Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.
