With the autumn season in full swing, I’m glad that I had the chance to chat with my Kitchen Pioneers on Thursday, November 5, 2020. I always enjoy discussing your questions, and I love learning about where you’re located and the types of traditional foods you are making. Among other topics during the live stream, we talked about grinding grain, using different sweeteners, and the canning supplies shortage.

This live stream replay is available to Kitchen Pioneers who have joined my YouTube membership community—The Traditional Foods Kitchen Academy.

Grinding Whole Grains
Many members enjoy grinding their whole grains to make flour. If you haven’t seen the Mockmill grain grinder in action, watch my Mockmill unboxing and test video.
Using Sucanat Instead of White Sugar
I was excited to learn that many members were using having success in substituting Sucanat instead of white sugar in their recipes. Their families don’t notice a difference in taste, and they are able to enjoy all the nutrients that Sucanat provides. Sucanat stands for Sugar Cane Natural, which is essentially dried cane juice.

Many of us like the Wholesome brand of Sucanat, which you can find, along with Allulose and their other products, at your local grocery store or online. And here are some delicious cookie recipes, including healthy cowboy cookies, that you can use with Sucanat:
Canning Supplies Shortage
I shared my concerns about seeing shortages of canning supplies in my local grocery stores. Some members talked about how they’ve seen some supplies arrive at their stores, but the inventory has been random. One member shared some good news that their store has been getting canning jars in larger quantities.
As your local grocery stores and online retailers restock their canning inventory, you’ll be able to replenish your supplies and begin those canning projects that you had put on hold. If you’re new to water bath canning, here are some videos from my Canning 101 series that will help get you started.
After you get your canning equipment, here are two water bath canning projects you can try. The first is an easy Low Sugar Strawberry Jam. Once you feel comfortable with the water bath canning process, you can make Marmalade for a delicious treat!
