Secret to a Healthy Make Ahead Gravy Mix
Have you ever read the ingredients on a package of bouillon cubes or bouillon granules? Salt is usually the first ingredient, followed by monosodium glutamate. I won’t even continue with the rest of the ingredients because many of them are as hard to spell as they are to say!
So what is a traditional foods home cook supposed to do when wanting to create a shelf-stable Make Ahead Gravy Mix that requires bouillon powder? Well, I am going to share a little secret with you! All you have to do is make your own bouillon powder by dehydrating some of your bone broth.
And any bone broth will do. Chicken, turkey, or beef bone broth all dehydrate beautifully. The good news is that you do not need a dehydrator to do this. You can dehydrate bone broth right in your oven, and I show you how to create chicken bouillon or beef bouillon in the following videos. (You can follow the same process to make turkey bouillon from turkey bone broth.)
Can You Make a Vegetarian Gravy Mix?
The best thing about making your own Make Ahead Gravy Mix is that you can make a vegetarian version by dehydrating a homemade vegetable bouillon. I walk you through the steps to create a vegetable bouillon and then turn it into a vegetable bouillon powder in this two-part video series below.
How to Make Gravy with Your Gravy Mix
Making the gravy mix is easy. It only involves three ingredients, which I list in the printable recipe below. And once you’re ready to turn your mix into a hot, delicious gravy that’s ready to ladle over some turkey, chicken, or better yet, mashed potatoes, you just need to take a couple of tablespoons of your mix and put it into a saucepan along with a bit of butter and water. In a matter of minutes, you’ll enjoy homemade gravy!
